An on-screen test is a rough guide, not a diagnosis. Results depend on your screen, lighting and distance; if you have any doubts or your vision gets worse, see an eye doctor.

How the test works
The letters stay large but get fainter and fainter. Visual acuity shows how small you can see; contrast sensitivity shows how faint. When it drops, it explains why things are hard at dusk, in fog and when driving at night.

What it shows
Contrast sensitivity drops with cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and after some surgeries — sometimes before visual acuity does.

Normal values
Adults under 60 usually score 1.65–2.0 log units on the Pelli-Robson chart. The score declines slightly with age.

Limitations
The result depends heavily on your screen: contrast, brightness and gamma vary from device to device. Use the test to compare yourself over time on the same device, not as a precise measurement.
